I think there are artisans who can be found in places like Hemmings Motor News who can rebuild these, but it's not a DIY project. The wire is a capillary tube containing freon under pressure which modulates the valve opening with temperature change. The valve will still open and close manually if that is broken, but not automatically regulate heater core temperature. Mine has been replaced with one that fits in the same location and operates with the same control wire, but has no thermostatic function. It is readily available from parts stores, take your old one in and look for something compatible, and get the one that opens and closes with the same motion instead of opposite--I think when I was looking there were two good choices but one worked the other way which would reverse the function of your dash control to up-cold/down-hot. Sorry I don't have a part #.
