I picked up the turbo B motor in the TSN classifieds for $200. I didn't tear it down since the guy assured me it was in good shape except for a minor repair. Thankfully, he was right. The trans. was from my '79 900EMS parts car. (the reason I started the project - the trans in the 99 died). Cooling fans, boost gauge and air dam from TSN classifieds $150. Turbo clutch $120 from the Saabsite. Exhaust downpipe is a Frankenstein cut and welded from a new '80 900T pipe $50. I'm still looking for a real one. MSS cat back exhaust $200. Hi flow cat. $100. Turbo rebuild cartridge from ebay $125. K&N air filter $50. Miscellaneous stuff $200(?)
I think you might need to change the fuel pump. The turbo requires a higher pressure pump than the non turbo cars.
I guess I spent around $1000. The biggest investment has been my time. Probably 6 or 8 months of weekends. And I've barely started the bodywork...
I still think it's been worth it. That little car really zips when the turbo kicks in! Plans are to add water injection and start playing with the boost.
I thought about using a 16valve turbo from a 900 but that would have been pushing my mechanic abilities. I don't know much about the H engines and I understand they are tougher to fit under the hood of a 99.
BTW I would invest in a Saab factory service manual if you can find one.
Good luck if you decide to do it and keep us posted.
