The problem with your old odometer is probably the usual broken gear syndrome (I've been told that it's a five dollar part and about two hours to put it in). I'm not sure why that would cause the speedo to go wild. The speedo on my current '78 99L was hanging up. Sometimes it would read 30mph when I was going with the traffic on the freeway. Other times it would read 40 when I was practically stopped. A couple times it read 20mph as I got out of the car in my driveway. The odometer clicked ovver a few tenths when it felt like it. When I changed it out, I inspected the odometer gears and found the broken one.
'73 and '75 transmissions are somewhat different because the '75 got beefed up somewhat. I don't think the speedo gear in the trans is any different though, although you could take them both out and count the teeth. Whatever difference there is between the two speedos is probably in the internal mechanism and I'm not sure that the final readings will be any different. The only way you can know for sure is to run at exactly 60mph for five minutes on a measured course and see if you cover the five miles in more or less than five minutes. As for odometer readings, my first '78 99L was off by about .05 miles over 25 miles starting at MP 0 on I-91 south of Springfield MA. It's a lot more accurate to measure it over 25 or 50 miles than a five mile stretch, but it would be impossible to hold it at exactly 60 mph for 50 miles.
