electrical gremlin in a '71 96 - HELP!

OK, here's the problem -
It was raining pretty bad a few weeks ago, and I was doing quite a bit of driving in the 96. Had been behaving itself perfectly up until then. Went into the store, and when I came out to start it, the first thing I noticed was that when I turned the key to the midposition the gauges didn't come up (fuel and temp needles usually power up at this point) and the alternator light usually powers on at this point, but it too was out. Radio came on, parking lights came on, but no gauges. Big deal I thought, something got wet - it'll dry out in a day or two.
Then, when I actually started the car, it started perfectly, and immediately, the gauges power up, and the alternator light comes on and stays on as I start driving. Well it's been doing this for 2 weeks now, and it's dry as a bone, and it's still doing it. I can't figure out what's going on. The alternator is charging the battery OK, not losing any juice there. Voltage regulator is working OK. Only other symptom (and this was happening before this) is that the fuel and temp gauges flicker on and off quite a bit, sometimes appear to hold at about half their normal position (car looks like it's running very cool, and fuel appears lower than it is) - Very weird stuff. Any suggestions?
I've got a volt meter, but profess to know very little about diagnosing electrical stuff.
Thanks in advance,
Chris
