Well. We have a car with a top speed of about 130-140 km/h (80-90MPH) on a good day. Total gear ratio is really low in both cases - a 3-speed box does 14MPH @ 1000rpm in highest gear, while the 4-speed does between 15.5 and 16MPH, depending on which version of the box. The engine pulls well from about 30MPH in highest gear, which is true for both boxes.

Top speed would theoretically be a bit higher for the 4-speed, IF the engine had enough power to rev to redline (approx. 5500rpm) in highest gear, which it doesn't. So in conclusion I'd say the difference in top speed is neglectible... the 4-speed box's ratio is beneficial, but otoh your engine won't rev as far with such a box, if stock.

What to make of all this? Well, at least to me it makes little sense to pass thru 4 gears on the way up to 30MPH, which is when you want to be parked in highest gear. If you're accelerating onto a freeway, maybe you want to push it a bit further but by the time you hit 50 you'll be in highest gear with both boxes. The 4-speed, in daily driving, merely adds another shift on the way without really adding anything valuable. Now, for tuned engines that actually have power to keep revving even in 4th, it's a different story altogether.

The only thing that *might* be a driveability reason for converting, is that the 4-speed has synchronization in all 4 gears. It takes a bit more guts and a quick, determined pull to elegantly shift down into the unsynch:ed 1st on a 3-spd box.

Noise level... let me put it this way. It's an old design. And on top of that, the engine is doing about 4000 rpm at highway speeds, so no matter how you look at it it's gonna sing to you! But, with a good exhaust system and good door seals that don't leak, it won't make any more inside noise than your average 80s car.

Question 2, the 750 vs the 850. I've never owned a 750 so I can't give you any subjective comment, other than that they sound noticeably different, and that from what I understand the 750s have more head gasket leakage problems due to the fact that they only use 8 cyl head bolts. But yes, the 850 is more powerful, they come in flavors of either 38, 40, or 42 hp depending on year, while the 750 is rated at 33.
