First, make sure it's full of clean fluid. It takes 1.8 quarts, although I've been told by a transmission expert that it won't hurt anything to go ahead and pour in two one-quart bottles, and that's been my experience. I like to use Redline MTL, which is easy to find at performance parts stores and is the right weight. Don't use anything heavier than 80 weight -- the rear bearings are lubricated by an 'oil catcher' at the top rear of the gearbox, and heavy oil won't get flung far enough to reach the catcher.
You can make a dipstick to check the level, but I've never had much luck with them. The other way to check is via the level plug. It's on the front lower surface of the transaxle housing and has a square head that sticks out. Remove this plug, top up with fluid until it dribbles out the hole, and you know the level is correct.
I don't know anything about rebuilding them except that it's hard. But good luck learning! The people who know how to do this are few and far between, and they're not going to live forever, so diffusing the knowledge seems like a good idea.
