The 850cc standard single carb motor isn't much more powerful than a standard 750cc. The difference is about 4 to 6 HP.
Most vintage Saabs speedometers are WAY off. Most are overly optimistic- they say 65 mph when your doing 60 mph. BUT- they are all different, drive next to a new car and compare readings. Most new cars are pretty accurate. My 61 96 with a three speed is turning 4600 rpm at an indicated 65 mph. I never drive over 4600 rpm if I can help it on the highway. I'm not in a hurry and I don't want to seize the motor. I know that the articles written about Strokers back in the day said they could cruise at 75 mph all day- or at full throttle all day- but they were selling cars and could care less if your engine seized. Their claims were a bunch of bull. Two strokes were seizing engine so fast Saab could barely keep up replacing them under warranty. So the question remains- how fast is too fast on the highway. The answer is simple, the faster you go the more likely you are to starve the engine of oil and have a seizure. If you’re in a hurry, you’re driving the wrong car.
