"Oil leak on drivers (left side of engine) engine was wet with oil from the valve cover gasket down. Actually slightly lower than the valve cover, but above the head gasket area. Plug closest to the firewall, along with the wire was pretty soaked, starter was soaked, CV boot soaked, and oil pooling in the pan on the drivers side."
Sounds like head gasket leakage.
"I cleaned everything up good, and also used a brake part cleaner on everything, after wiping everything dry. My engine was pretty clean to begin with, so I figured an oil leak, now, would be easy to spot. I ran the car for a while - changing the engine speed with the throttle linkage to simulate moderate driving. I continued to watch, and noticed a faint amount of smoke,"
From where?
"and a couple a drip or two coming from the top of the dip stick tube."
Oh. That sounds like combustion pressure into the crankcase. That can happen from piston ring/cylinder wall wear and/or PCV system failure.
The definitive test for engine oil leaks is to put a dye in the crankcase, run the engine for a short time, and see where the dye shows up. To see the dye you need a suitable UV lamp.
Question: Could this have been my oil leak? It does coincide with the location of the leak pretty well, and with blowback while the car is moving it would explain how the above sections that I mentioned are getting wet. Has anyone heard of this happening before, and if so, what is the fix? new dipstick? some sort of gasket? Plugging it with a rubber stop, and carring the dipstick in the trunk? The dipstick doesn't seem to fit real snuggly.
