You know the old syncronous carbs that Saab supplied are my favorites just for their nice power right off idle. I have installed stacks and stacks of 40 DFI-2s, 40 DFI-5s and 38 DGMS, 38 DGASs as well as the common DGV-5A 32/36 progressive. It imay seem a bit odd but I dislike the progressive carbs because after paying for the carb, the manifold, the filter linkage etc you never get any benefit of the second and usually larger secondary until you are already at 2/3 throttle, and even though I have raced my old 96, you aren't always at 2/3 thottle or higher around town.
Idle quality will depend far more these days on the condition of the particular carb, the condition of the low speed advance weights, and in general how tight the motor is. With a good fresh dirtibutor, even the nice SAAB 7.6 Rally cam idles just fine at around 900 rpm.
But in the end who care about idle, we want the thing to go!
