breather from rocker box is pretty important...

...as it provides filtered air for the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PVC) system -- hose allows it to inhale through the air filter.

If you leave off the hose and leave the rocker-cover port open, the engine will inhale whatever dirty old unfiltered air is around the port -- first place that dirt goes is onto your rocker gear and the next place it goes is into the oil.... neither one is good.

If you plug up the rocker-cover port, then the PCV has no place to inhale at all -- then you have no PCV system, which means oil contaminated with crankcase blow-by gases and other stuff which reduces its lubricating properties... also not good.

Your homemade air filter sounds really clever, so it should be no sweat for you to add a tap for the breather line. You can get lots of different styles of air-filter breather elements in blister packs at any auto parts store. Just look at them and pick one that has the right size of hose fitting and will fit into your filter housing... drill an extra hole, fit the breather element through, run a hose from the rocker to it, and ahhh now your PCV system is breathing nice clean filtered air, no problem!
