If it's broken just behind the control lever, unscrew the plastic plate that holds the three cables in place, take the end of the heater cable, saw off a bit of the outer mantle, and make a few loops in the inner cable around a nail or a drill with the same thickness as the stub on the control lever. Don't worry if the loops are not too round, it will still work. I repaired the cable in my 96 that way years ago and it functioned beuatifully again. Before you start looping, take the broken part of the cable from the control lever and wrap in the same direction. If you wrap the other way around you'll end up with a cable you can't get into the plastic securing plate anymore.
