Hi everyone,
I have aquired a 1700 v4 engine that I would like to rebuild with assistance from a local friend. I also aquired quite a bit of new and rebuilt engine parts with the package. My question is: I am going to have the block and heads sent out to be heat cleaned and so forth, and I am trying to find out what would be the best piston set for the rebuild. I would like to go somewhat larger with something that might in the long run give me a little more horsepower, and would like a recommendation on what would work best. One of my friends recommended a set of German Pinto or Capri pistons that work well with this V4? Then having a machine shop do the boring work, as well as, doing the machining work to install hardened valve seats, and also replace the fiber balance shaft gear with steel. I currently have a new timing gear set with the steel balance shaft gear, and a newly rebuilt set of rocker assmbls, and an early distributor from a 67 I also planned on picking up a new manifold that would accomodate a two-barrel carb setup.
My goal is to have a reliable setup that can be driven often, but also have a little more guts at the same time. My goal is not for all-out performance, but I nice mix of reliablility with a little better performance. My current engine (in the car) is the 1500, which runs great with 65,000 original miles. I would like to eventually swap the two and save the current engine for a possible second Saab, or keep things the way they are and put the new engine in a yet unpruchased second Saab.
I am currently trying to aquire the necessary parts for the job, and hope to work on the engine as a winter project (hope to)
If anyone would have part nos. or kept an itemized list of what they used in thier past rebuild, I would appreciate it. If anyone can email me anything, I would appreciate it greatly.
Thanks,
Randy
