I have a very hard time believing that this could be anything but a worn or possibly oily clutch. Usually when the freewheel fails, it simply won't engage driving at all; slipping just isn't part of the picture. So if that's your problem I would be _very_ surprised.
That said: IF your freewheel is acting up, in 99% of the cases it's just a matter of it being clogged with old oily goo. This is what we do in Sweden: Drain your transmission oil and fill the box up with kerosene. Drive the car, slowly and carefully, for a short distance so that the cleansing kerosene gets to all the places in your transmission and freewheel. Drain the kerosene, top up with proper tranny oil. Drive for a day or two, then do another oil change in the tranny.
This takes care of 99% of all freewheel problems.
