HELP! What is a safe spring compressor for '67 96?

My mechanic nearly took his own head off trying to remove the front springs on my '67 96 (He's replacing the bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends). He usually works on Mercedes and his compressor is the wrong size.
I need to know what kind of spring compressor works safely and where can I rent, borrow, buy, pilfer one?
He got a bad whack on the head when his spring compressor slipped off and said he can't work on it anymore until I find a good spring compressor that fits. (I don't blame him!)
HELP!
