Being somewhat mechanically and electrically challenged, I have
use Saabs over the years as tools to overcome my deficiencies.
Both, strokers and V-4's being pretty simple engines and easy
to work on. Presently I am breaking in my v-4 after putting new
rings and bearings in. While i had the engine out, I also replaced
the mechanical fuel pump with an electric, and replaced the weber
carb, which was leaking with a fomoco, which I rebuilt and surprised
myself when it started right up when I put it on.
Now, with less than 100 miles on the overhaul, when I start it up
cold one or two plugs will foul if I dont keep the revs up around 3500
rpm until it warms up. After warmup, going down the highway, it
sounds pretty happy at about 3500, but if I try to get a little more
out of it it starts missing and backfiring around 4000.
I set the valve clearance to specks while I was putting it together,
so that should be ok as was the timing, which was to specs and it
starts on the first or second crank. I am getting juice to the elec.
pump from the + terminal at the coil. I am wondering if this could be
"stealing" juice from the coil at the higher revs? If so where should
I connect the hot wire to the fuel pump to get juice? I have a schematic
for car, but lack the theory to understand it's implications.
Am ever so grateful to any of the experts known to frequent this board
that can suggest troubleshooting this frustrating problem. Thank You!
