That or any other expedient will be fine to get the old one out. I believe the threads are standard 3/8" or 1/2" pipe available anywhere, the only oddity is the wrench to remove that odd plug. I believe they made it that way to prevent its removal by mistake while attempting to change the engine oil. Trust me, this has happened and destroyed engines and transmissions. Just get the old one out by any means, throw it away, get a new plug with the same threads that can be operated conventionally (I prefer hex plug, fits flush, find one at the hardware or plumbing store).
