What's the mechanical condition of the engine. Take a compression test and make sure you've got no mechanical problems. Never attack ignition or fuel problems without assessing the engine condition first.
Depends on which distributor you have as to what condenser you need. (Look on the side of the dist. body for the ten digit Bosch number.) There were several different condensers over the years, and I haven't been able to find any of them. (There were five different distributors in the first six months of V-4 production.) I have the old Bosch parts books that have all the information on the V-4 distributors, and the condensers are not available. One book even has photos of all the different offerings from Bosch, and nobody else had the same mounting system(s). I've been through this for two different cars. On one I didn't replace the condenser, and on the other I installed a Pertronix.
Are your points burnt or pitted? If so it needs a condenser, but if they are just grayish and there's no material being transfered from one to the other, the condenser is fine. Are you absolutely certain there is no wire shorting out? You've got the wire from the points connected to #1 on the coil? Make sure the connector wire inside the distributor isn't shorting, and the condenser pigtail isn't shorting. Check that the tiny ground strap between the vacuum advance plate (which the points are mounted on) and the body isn't touching the points.
