Geoff,
I have installed Weber carbs, and FoMoCo carbs on my 96's and 97's. The information below is paraphrased from Jack Ashcraft's Weber Carb book. (page 10). Hope Jack doesn't mind. BTW, his VSAAB books are great.
The original directions call for modifying a EARLY linkage to a LATE linkage configuaration. The same should hold true to convert LATE to EARLY.
(The linkage direction can be reversed by using the earlier (V-4) car linkage. If that is not availible, the later linkage can be twisted by using two vise grip pliers and twisting the linkage to fit. The rod will withstand the twist, no problem, if it is in normal condition, and not damaged in some way, or rusted.)
I don't know enough about Carbs to intellegently debate the pros and cons of all three. I have a FoMoCo carb on my 1972 Mod 96, and I used a early Ford Pinto carb rebuild kit to refresh it. It runs fine. I have a few Solexes sitting on the shelf, and I will snag a VW rebuild kit off e-bay, and see what happens. In addition to the Weber 34 ICH on my 67, I have another Weber on the shelf, but it has issues.
