Spiv is more expert than I, but I do know that detonation can be caused by too much advance ignition timing, maybe as much as 20-25 degrees. Thats why the fire is coming through the carburetor; the cylinder is getting the spark and lighting the fire while the intake valve is still open. And eventually it will burn holes in the tope of your pistons. I think youve got to bite the bullet and pull the distributor out of the block and back it up a tooth. Remember that the rotor turns clockwise. Since the engine is running, you are in the ball park and can put some nail polish or whatever on the #1 plugwire cap. Then pull the distributor and set the timing marks at 6% BTDC, and align the distributor that way. Luck!
