Probably the most relevant bit of info on the 'net is Martin Hilvers' invaluable 96 rust map, at the link below. Floorpan rust is the bane of all older SAABs (although possibly not as big a problem in Australia as in the US, where many local governments salt the roads in winter.) I would say the second leading problem area is the transaxle (long-lasting if previous owners have changed the lubricant frequently, frangible if not) and the third most likely problem area is probably the engine's balance shaft gear (made of fiber and liable to strip at about 80,000-100,000 mi.)
For your question about the 3-hr drives: The cooling system on an early 96 was JUST big enough to do the job, so if it has silted up over time the car may tend to run hot. Flushing it and possibly getting the radiator recored (maybe with an extra row added to the core) should cure this.
Once the cooling system is healthy, there shouldn't be any reason you can't drive a 96 for as long as your backside will stand --- they're a bit threshy at highway speeds because of the short final drive ratio (lots of revs at highway speed) but the engine doesn't mind at all.
Good luck and have fun!
