You can check for the presence of oil on clutch components by removing the inspection plate at the top rear of the trans bell housing.
It's also conceivable the pressure plate may be warped if the mounting bolts weren't tightened sequentially.
Another possibility might be that the rear trans mount may have failed... this could cause the judder, as well as a misalignment of the shifter mechanism resulting in difficult shifting. (You said you checked the _motor_ mounts, but didn't mention the trans mount... which is very difficult to inspect without trans removal.)
Unfortunately, correcting any of these problems will require engine and/or transmission removal.
