Have an assistant peek with the distributor cap off while you bump the starter to determine direction of distributor shaft rotation, or look in the book you might find it, or study the firing order from the spark plug wires. Now that you know which way it goes, turn the distributor body in the direction of shaft rotation to retard timing, and oppositely to advance timing.
Next task: Study the setup until you understand why this is so, then you will understand your ride better and can teach somebody else.
Note: If you are trying to achieve driveablity absent timing light, it is better to err in the retarded direction (you will lose performance but not damage the engine) than the advanced direction (engine damage may occur from excessive advance).
PS: In many cases the distributor hold-down bolt leaves a mark on the adjuster slot on the body, and simply resetting to that mark will get you pretty close.
