Octane Levels

I'm wondering what octane level of gasoline you all use in your V4s. I had been using 87 octane in my '70 96 (with a later 1.7 liter engine) along with a lead subsitute as I have not had the heads done for unleaded yet. Anyway, on the highway when going up an incline I'd always get what I thought was a lean surge (running a 175 jet in my Weber 34ICH), unable to accelerate to faster than about 65-70 MPH in such a situation. Well anyway, I went to the gas station the other night and they were out of 87 so I filled the tank with 89. And guess what, the car is so much better on the highway now, accelerates nice and smoothly with lots of power up all hills. So I'm guessing I should just stick to the 89?
