MikeinME, you might consider subjecting each of the motor's cylinders to a "leak-down test".
A cylinder's leak-down test shares a common theory with the compression test. But you can get a better idea of what is wrong. Using the cylinder's spark plug hole to pressurize the cylinder with compressed air you can figure out if and where your cylinder is leaking. You will need to do this when the TEST cylinder is at TDC (top dead center) OR THE COMPRESSED AIR COULD TURN THE ENGINE OVER AND CAUSE DAMAGE. By comparing your results with a repair manual, which lists the rates for cylinder leak-down, you can determine if your cylinder/engine is up to specs. If you can figure out where the compressed air is going during your leak-down test you may be able to figure out if you need a new head gasket, new rings or a valve job! You can do this by using your ears, and your hand to find the escaping air (wet your hand for higher sensitivity). First put your hand or ear over the oil fill hole. If air is felt or heard coming out here you’ve got air leaking around the rings into the crankcase. Next check the exhaust pipe and then the carburetor's intake throat for leaking air. If air is felt or heard coming out here it may mean that you have a exhaust or an intake valve that is not seating properly. Finally, open your radiator and if bubbles of air are seen coming out of the coolant then you’ve got a blown head gasket.
