The 93~97 Saab transmission and final drive ratios are better suited for a higher engine rpm than are possible from most diesels. I had done some quick calculations when mulling over putting my spare 90 hp 1.9 VW TDI engine into a Sonett.
The TDI revs up to 4,500 rpm. That's good for barely 80 mph with the Sonett tranny and final drive. Few older generation indirect injection diesels rev even that fast. Considering Kubota or Westerbeke as a possible donor? Accept 3,000 rpm red line and a top speed of 55 mph.
Peak torque from that TDI is 150 lb*ft, nearly three times the V4. How long will the transmission internals last?
The only way this type of engine might be suitable is with a speed increase device (overdrive) between the relatively slow, high torque engine and the transmission input. This could increase the effective transmission input shaft speed and a proportional reduction in torque force...
Or a full transplant of the Mercedes transverse rear engine Smart 660 c.c turbo diesel and tiptronic six speed into the front of a V-Saab. Just graft the Smart transaxle outputs to the Saab outer drives with custom half-shafts...
Or a liter sized sportbike gasoline engine with torque similar to the V4 but a 9k to 12k rev limit mated to the Saab transmission...
Well, those are the current delusions keeping my otherwise idle mind out of mischief while my V4 is once again out of the car.
