I recently replaced the brake pads on the disc brakes at the front of my '73 Saab 96. I got the pads from Kragen Auto and they assured me they were for a Saab 96. I compared them to the old pads I replaced and they looked the same, only new. After replacing them, for the first time since I've had the car I'm hearing a very loud humming noise that seems to be coming up from the bottom of the car up through the floorboard. The sound is like a very loud low vibrating musical note. There is absolutely no sound from the car until it's been moving for about 20 minutes, when it suddenly appears. The noise is there especially when I lower my speed. The noise goes completely away when I apply the brakes. It also goes away when I turn the wheels for a right turn, but reappears when I go straight or make a left turn. Since the sound only appears after the car has been running awhile, could it be something that is rubbing and that expands with heat? Perhaps one of the pads is rubbing against the rotor all the time (I hear no scrape-scrape sound)? Or could it even be the wheel that is somehow rubbing against something? I took out and re-positioned the pads twice on both front wheels to see if this made a difference. It didn't. Could it be something else entirely? I often have the misfortune of working on something only to have something else simultaneously go wrong, which drives me crazy. Has anyone had this problem with a loud noise that appears after the car has been running awhile and that goes away upon braking and know what it might be?
