I drove my 1967 Saab 96 two - stroke yesterday to our sons soccer game. It has been running fine and it did transporting us there. When we loaded up the car to leave, it started right up. I pushed the choke back in and gave it a little gas to get the engine up to speed. The generator light which usually flickers at low rpms stayed on the entire time no matter how much gas I gave the engine. Here is where it gets strange.

I went to put the car in gear and let the clutch out and there was nothing. The car did not move at all. I tried all of the other gears and it was the same thing. No movement, no load on the engine. I popped the hood with the engine running to take a look. I did not see anything out of place. I went back into the car and disengaged the freewheel. When I put the car in first, it goes backwards. I try reverse and it goes forward. In fact gears 1-4 have the car going backwards and reverse is the only forward gear,

The generator is still on the entire time. I figure, might as well shut it off , wait a few minutes and start it again. This time as always, the generator light flickers and then turns off. I put the car in gear and everything is once again fine. This is not a car that has a lot of electrical components. What is going on and why would this even happen at all. I am stumped and have no answer. It was like being in Herbie the Love Bug with the car having a mind of its own.

Sorry for the length. I hope someone can offer some insight.
