Car died (won' start)

Hi Everyone.
I took my 69/96 out for a ride today. The car ran fine. I shut the car off, went in the store, and when I came out and tried to start the car - nothing! no click, no sound no anything. I have lights, so it doesn't seem to be the battery. I checked the wires to everything that I could see under the dash, and in the engine compartment, did a fuse roll for the heck of it - nothing. Anyone have any ideas? I did notice that the starter sounded a little funny during the summer - made a whinning sound. Not sure if that had anything to do with this.
thanks in advance,
Randy
