Floor Repair Welding Advice

Most repair advice I have seen on welding in new floor panels says to trim the new and old pieces and butt-weld the seam. Since I have limited metal working and welding experience (and abilities) I think I could do a better job if I bent a flange on one piece and let it lap over the other. I know I need to seal the seams to keep water out from between the panels but is there a structural concern doing it this way?
