...so you will KNOW the last time it was changed, rather than just having to take the previous owner's word for it.
You also never know for sure whether or not the previous owner (or his mechanic) put the right stuff in it.
I agree with everyone else who posted here that Redline MTL is a great choice, and it's fairly easy to get. Some knowledgeable people swear by AMSOil, but it isn't as easy to find, and I don't know which "flavor" you'd need to get the correct 75-80 viscosity. Since Redline MTL only comes in one weight, and that's the correct weight for your SAAB transaxle, it makes things easier. Just make sure you get plain MTL, not "MTL-90" or one of their other oils. There's nothing wrong with the others, it's just that we know MTL works and we don't know about the others.
As for changing it... This seems like overkill to some people, but I change the transaxle oil every time I change the engine oil. I mean, as long as you're getting dirty crawling around on the garage floor anyway, why not get it out of the way? Two quarts of MTL added onto the cost of the oil change isn't going to break you, and it beats worrying about how your transaxle is doing, so go ahead and make your life easier is my motto...
