Just unhook the cable from the tranny and from the back of the speedometer and pull the cable out through the hole in the firewall. The inside of the cable will slide right out. I just used some kind of synthetic axle grease and smeared it on. On my 1973, it did reduce the jumping around, but did not get rid of it completely. You can check for kinks, but mine is routed correctly and still jiggles a little at the lowest speeds.
