Really, a 99 is probably just as rare as a 96 these days. I drive one everyday and would take it over my 96, 95 and just barely over my sonett. It is easy to work on, and easier by far to upgrade. I have a 16V turbo motor in mine along with other bits from 900s for the suspension and axle upgrades. Like larry said, you can go with bigger tires, and a tougher tranny (and there are more transmissions around, too) but it is probably a more versatile car overall. I have friends who hillclimb 99s, autocross, rallycross and rally them. 96s have all their charm and I'll always keep one around, but when I want to feel like I'm not just "cruisin'", I will always take the 99.
