I have not needed to address this problem but have several suggestions. A) Carburetor Cleaner in a spray can, it is pretty aggressive stuff, very different from Brake Cleaner, may be hard to find due to air quality concerns, and for the same reason may be different today from traditional formulations, I haven't bought any for years. B) Lacquer Thinner from a paint store, much nastier than Paint Thinner which I think is basically kerosene. C) Acetone, I think you can buy this at the drugstore. D) WD-40, this is a long shot, it will work on a lot of stuff but if your paint thinner doesn't do the trick then I doubt that it will either, they are not that different.
All of those are nasty environmentally and for the lungs and skin, so use sparingly and take appropriate precautions.
Please answer why do you need to remove those adhesive dots, and also let us know what works or doesn't.
