I've had excellent luck with Mobil 1 synthetics in several high mileage engines.
I changed my '96 Dodge Dakota over at about 120,000 miles because it had a bad rear main seal leak (a qt in 500 miles or so). Now at 210,000 (no joke) it leaks hardly at all, a qt in 2,500 miles or so.
I have found that on some vehicles oil consumption will increase right after changing over. I've been told this happens because the Mobil 1 is cleaning away crud that was blocking the leak previously. Once the crud is cleared away the Mobil 1 can rejuvenate the seal and slow the leak again. This happened on my '85 Mercedes 190D. Consumption on the first oil change was something like 3,000mi/qt which got as bad as 1,000mi/qt but is now back to something like 2,500mi/qt. I change the oil in that car at around 11,000 miles but I have the oil analyized so I know its still good to there.
My '64 Cub Cadet model 70 was leaking/burning pretty bad when I first switched it over but thats also cut down significantly.
For weight I'd suggest 5w40 "Turbo Diesel Truck" (stupid name) unless you think thats too light (or you can't find it, I've had good luck at Autozone) in which case I'd go with 15w50. I've used both in my car (the truck and Cub Cadet get 10w30) with good results, the 5w40 seems slightly better but the 15w50 is slightly easier to get, both are excellent oil.
In case you're wondering 10w30 goes in the truck because thats what Speedee stocks. I hate changing the oil in that truck because its nearly impossible to replace the oil filter without oil getting all over...
