Your auto parts store should have a listing for the points and condenser. Bosch parts are original equipment and very good, but I have no objection to any brand for these parts. Most stores will carry Bosch. The disadvantage of points is that the wear and get out of adjustment which alters the ignition timing, leading in extreme cases to poor or no engine operation. Timing needs to be checked say every 10K miles, and 20K is a fair replacement interval. The condenser typically lasts longer but is usually replaced with the points, and failure will cause similar symptoms. There should be no difference in performance between correctly adjusted points and electronic ignition. Electronic ignition is universal on modern cars because when well designed it will likely last as long as the car, requires no adjustment, and allows the spark timing to be precisely controlled by the engine computer. The precise control argument does not apply on vintage SAABs, but the durability and timing consistency arguments still do. Therefore conversion to electronic ignition is better and cost-effective if one has confidence in the setup. I have lost confidence in Pertronix. I am inspired by this conversation to seek an alternative electronic ignition so I will do the homework and report shortly.
