Contrary to what was true a year or two ago, the diesel oils have similarly reduced ZDDP and Molybdenum disulfate due to what Don addressed in his post. ZDDP is a catalyst, it makes the molecules separate and adhere differently. Moly is a lubricant. For older engines, any modern highway-use oil carrying API CJ-4 or SM ratings should have an additive - BG MOA, GM EOS break-in supplement or similar. The alternatives are Brad Penn oils straight up which I believe are still API-SJ - you can buy a case or two from http://www.bradpennracing.com/. Synthetics are not a bad idea but they are API-SM and a can of BG MOA is still highly recommended.
Read my upcoming article in the Vintage SAAB Club newsletter on this very topic.
