Gery,
You didn't tell us much about the car- mileage, condition, maintenance...
A compression check will reveal quite a bit. Pull the plugs, ground the coil wire, then check compression on each cylinder with a compression gauge. Record your readings. Then squirt a little oil in the sparkplug hole and repeat. Readings for a typical V-4 should be within 5 or 10 psi of each other and above say, 110. Lowever than 100 or a single cylinder low indicates a problem. If the compression increases with the oil squirt, it is most likely worn rings. If it remains the same, it is most likely burned valves.
A puff of smoke on first start of the day is most likely the valve seals, which are no big deal to ignore. Constant smoke or smoke on acceleration usually means rings are worn, not just bad valve seals. The compression check will tell you how bad things are.
Why not do the test and publish the results to the list. We'll help from there.
