Hi Jerry,
There is a choice to make:
A) Separate engine from transmission. This makes removal of the trans a bit easier, with respect to the Tee driveshafts. However, it can be tough fitting the engine back into the gearbox if the gearbox is in the car. Can put alot of strain on the main splined shaft.
B) Remove as a unit. You have a little more work with the driveshafts, but it avoids the hassle of fitting the gearbox main splined shaft through the clutch/pressure plate, with the inherrent danger of misalignment and possible undue pressure on the shaft.
Most VSaab guys I know (including me) choose B- remove as a unit, for the reasons above. And I personally remove the bolts from the bottom ball joint on BOTH sides, pull and block them completely out of the way. I then gently guide the unit into the rear mount at an angle (front is higher than rear), drop it on the front mounts, and then slide in the tee shafts. I really like to mate the trans to the engine on the shop floor.
Make sure you check the needle bearings and the cups on the end of the tee shafts. And check the transmission outer driveshafts for wear where the tee cups ride. I had some issues of judder and shudder on my '68 Deluxe last summer and it turned out to be grooves worn in the outer driveshafts. Plus the bearing cups were getting rough on the inside. Renew your boots if they are split or getting soft. No better time for that than when the drivetrain is out!
