Glad to hear you're making a driver out of it. My '72 96 has been my daily driver for almost a year now and I love it! It's been on 3 trips over 600 miles each (38 mpg :-)
Anyway, the previous owner did install a new fuel level sending unit before I bought the car, so I went to a salvage yard and found a gauge from a '69 96, but the gauge reading read backwards, which actually served the purpose to a point, but I wanted a gauge that actually read correctly. So what I did then was to measure the ohm reading at the sending unit when full and again at empty, and then found a fuel gauge on-line that matched the ohm range of the sending unit. Works great! You can search gauges on-line and find several brands. egauges.com has a lot of choices. Let me know how it goes. Have fun!
