Re: Replacing Motor Mounts Posted by eric in vermont [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Replacing Motor Mounts, BAAB ![]() ![]() |
Not bad at all.
The mounts themselves have a single bolt with nut on the bottom and the same on the top. They tend to be covered with years of nasty grease, so its a bit of a messy job. I recommend removing the bottom nut first. Then loosen the top nut. Then jack up the engine a bit to take the pressure off- not too far as you'll stress the exhaust. The motor mount top bolt connects to the engine mount. The engine mount connects to the block with 3 bolts. You'll probably have to remove the engine mount from the block to get the motor mount out from under it. The passenger side has less room and is more challenging as I said.
Only problem I can think of is that sometimes the mount will spin as you loosen the nut. That's why I recommend loosening the nut with the engine weight on the mount. Otherwise, you have to use channel locks to hold the mount while you loosen the nut.
One other tip- watch the fuel line on the driver's side. It attaches to the "frame" and snakes up past the mount. It's supposed to be metal at this point, transistioning to rubber to go to the fuel pump. BE CAREFUL with this fuel line and examine it closely. Not a bad time to replace the rubber line and the fuel filter. Any auto parts store will sell you fuel line by the foot- 1/4" is the size. Don't use a plastic see-thru filter under the hood- go with metal.
1. You don't want to stress the fuel line and cause a break in either the metal part or the rubber part. Check the metal part for rust.
2. Make sure that it isn't pinched or rubbing against either the motor mount or the engine mount. I pulled the motor in my '68 Deluxe this spring and found that the metal line was half worn through where it contacted the mount- NOT GOOD.
Looks like I'm writing a book...better leave it at that...
