Thanks for the advice, kansas. I already have a couple quarts of Redline MTL, with exactly that in mind. Haven't taken a look at the trans drain plug yet, but this trans has supposedly been rebuilt once in the past, so hopefully it'll have a drain plug in it that can be pulled with a normal wrench. It was thoughtful of Saab to put the trans fill plug where it's reasonably accessible -- last time I did this job was on a VW Vanagon, and I needed to exercise some creativity to get the oil into the trans. ;)
I may just do what you suggest and buy an assortment of copper washers. I always try to use a new one because after they've been crushed once, they work-harden and require a lot more torque to seal, which is asking for trouble in the form of stripped threads.
