Yes, a stronger gearbox did come out then. However, the last year that Saab 96's were imported to the USA was '73 and for Sonett's was '74. So these improved gearboxes are only available in Europe.
And as Brian pointed out, the Sonett has a little higher ring and pinion ratio which means lower RPM's at a given speed. However, since there are more teeth on the pinion with the Sonett gearbox, it is a little weaker.
I've written a number of posts about the VSaab transmission- the shaft nuts loosen and pretty soon it goes ker-blam. You can search for those to learn a little more. I also have an article on that very subject in the current issue for the Vintage Saab Club of North America.
Check out http://www.vsaab.com and you'll find a little guide about looking for rust in the most likely areas.
