I've had at least a dozen of these apart and performed a couple of "rebuilds" myself, with simple shop tools. I don't think these gearboxs are difficult or that odd.
My problem at home is that I don't have the proper jigs to set up the tolerances and have to jury-rig things. Also, I don't have the proper tools to insert new bearings without stressing them. As long as the guy has the proper tools, that will go a long way.
In addition, there are some improvements to be made upon reassembly, particularly with the shaft nuts and their locking devices. Does he know about these? There are better than stock bearings as well.
Finally, where are you going to get the parts? Bearings are one thing, but what if you have a worn synchro? A guy that rebuilds the Saab gearbox every day has sources for all parts, even if it's good used components.
So what about cost? How much are you saving by using your local guy? Keep in mind that you can send a gearbox, minus bell housing, via UPS for nominal cost.
I don't want to discourage you from your local guy. However, there's something about sending it to a guy that's done 100's of them and knows all the improvements that can be made. That's worth actual dollars to me. When I wanted a gearbox done RIGHT, absolutely RIGHT, I send it to Jack Lawrence.
