I am a Fire Chief so I have access to very powerful hydraulic tools. First attempt was to use the tool to squeeze the spring like a big pair of pliers. Worked sorta, but got real scary as the spring reached max compression and there was no good way to try and "wiggle" the thing into place with a big set of Jaws. So then I get a great idea that I will weld up a jig and put the spring in it and then use a hydraulic ram to compress it. Once compressed, I tried to put a steel cable around the spring to hold it compressed, one on each side. Worked for about a minute until the cable started to slide along the coils and then things went south in a hurry. Any video would be X-rated as the string of expletives I let loose, while trying to get a spring straightened out that was bent like a "U", was colorful to say the least. Trust me on this, if you try this task, get a regulation spring compressor, period!
