Bob,
Hey it's Justin here! I just had the same problem, I Just put shims between the Pressure plate and the flywheel! My problem blocked me from the gears as well! I use Wave washers that fit the 8mm blots on the PP!
Your Clutch is most likely not releasing !
From bob Smith--
"The problem is in varying thickness of different clutch discs and some wear in the mounting holes for the release bearing. Back in the early '70s Saab provided flat metal shims to install between the flywheel and the pressure plate, none to be found now. I go to the hardware store and buy thin wave washers with an 8mm hole in them and use them for shims. I use them on every new clutch installation. You can remove them later as the clutch wears if you feel ambitious. I actually can install the washers thru the inspection plate hole with out removing the engine, but you need very talented fingers to do the job. The thick disc causes the pressure plate contact surface to move too far in toward the flywheel, and the release bearing will hit the pressure plate fingers before the clutch will release."
Then he sent me---
"Install the disc and pressure plate, put a straight edge across the
release bearing contact plate on the pressure plate. Measure the distance
between the straight edge and flywheel surface, it should be approximately
1", if it is less than 1" it's probably a candidate for shimming.
I buy wave washers the size needed to fit the bolt at my local Aubuchon
hardware store. The wave washer is thin and uniform in thickness, I have
not measured one for thickness, regular flat washers are too thick.
Another thing to look out for is a flywheel that has been machined on the
clutch surface without being equally machined on the bolt surface for the
pressure plate. In that case the measurement with the straight edge will be
noticeably greater than 1".
If you put it together with a measurement of less than 1" your release
fork will probably hit the pressure plate fingers when you push in the
clutch pedal."
This solved my clutch problem.
