Tom,
Sounds like you have a modified motor there!
1. 1 3/4" exhaust outlets are definitely not stock. This is what they are when opened up! A good sign for those heads! The inner "donuts" that go between the head and the exhaust should be opened up to match.
2. You can get all metal timing gears- Jack currently sells them. The one that gives people fits is the balance shaft gear. The front balance shaft bearings wear, the gear teeth don't make mesh as deeply, the teeth shear right off. A metal gear is stronger. But the root cause is worn bearings. Grab the balance shaft and see if you have side to side or up and down play.
3. That carb is the normal 2 barrel carb. A good one! Can be fuel boiling issues for some...another topic.
4. Intake manifold- the stock intake should be ported. Jack has never particularly liked the Weber 32/36 with the stock intake, due to the placement of the runners...another topic. Most of us normal people have no problem with it.
5. Valve springs- only reason to upgrade them is if you have a better cam, a balanced motor, and a light flywheel. My Sonett has all that and I can run up to 8000 rpm...if I dare. The only other reason is if they are weak.
6. It would be nice to use your entire donor motor, since it seems to have upgrades. You'd need to know the oil pressure as a minimum- and check that balance shaft play. But...you don't want to swap the motor just now. So I'd swap the heads, intake and carb. You have to pull all that anyway. The cost is a head gasket set and some time. Once you get the heads off the donor motor, you can check for cylinder wear and also see if it has been bored.
