Carb/Fuel Issue Solced (Weber 34ICH/Elec Fuel Pump) Posted by hondahawkrider [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
All,
My father and I have been restoring a 74 96V4 to use as a historic rallye car... Since we have gotten it on the road - we have had something of a surging or lurching issue when starting from a dead stop if it's been running for a bit.. It appears that the issue is resolved now.
Our original issue was believe to be the carb - it felt as if the gas in the carb was boiling over in the carb when it sat.. A number of things were done including the pierce spacer as referenced in (http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9x/index.html?bID=16126). It made a difference - it didn't cure the problem. The lurching was better - basically I could keep it from lurching if I eased onto the gas, but it would still happen if I stepped into it all the way.. At a SCCA rally 2 months ago - we had to dnf and get towed back as the car died mid rallye. The ultimate reason turned out to be the pickup in the gas tank which we had professionally redone (and he was local to MD as well :D). Anyway, one of the suggestions we got during the process (before we knew the pickup was bad) was that we mounted the Electronic Fuel pump in the rear of the car.. As that Electronic pump do much better at pushing fuel instead of pulling it (I forget the specs). Anyway, the car is back on the road with the new tank and the fuel pump and it runs ALLOT better (So far - no surging and/or lurching). The interesting this is the Fuel Pump was noisy under the hood (something I have seen a fair number of posts about) but this same pump in the rear is now very quiet, and the car runs significantly smoother..
Anyway, I thought I would mention it as it was a real PITA for us.. We have been looking at different carb solutions - etc. So if you are running a ICH with issues and it has an electronic fuel pump - it's worth the spacer and maybe 2-3 hours to relocate the fuel pump to the back of the car... Just a thought...
