If the car has been seating for awhile, you may have some blockage in the line. This would happen to my car for the first year after I restored it after it had been seating for years. Once I ran a few tanks though it was fine. To diagnose this have a friend stand with there ear next to the filler neck with the cap open take the gas line off the fuel pump and blow back though the gas line if you hear gas splashing arond in the tank no fuel blockage if you don't then you have a blockage. Most times compressed air will blow the blockage back in to the tank.
