Yes, the plug is a tapered pipe thread. I've always used a few wraps of teflon tape to seal, and to keep the iron plug from welding to the aluminum case. I've had a few drip a bit over the years. I suppose there are a number of sealants you could use.
They do make taps for the threads. My tap and die set has some that are smaller pipe thread taps. You could get one and run it in and out a couple of times if you think that would help. Then a good flush.
