I'm about 95% confident Ford/Saab did not invest in balancing the motor.
The V4 is a short stroke engine, so it can take lots of RPMs. It's not like a 426 HEMI with lots of mass and stroke needing every ounce of optimization. My motor is balanced and HP. I also expect & do run the <...> out of it! The cam sets the motor up for an optimal 5500 to 6500 RPM range. It's a ~115+ horse. So I went for a balancing. My 2011 bill included 4 rods reconditioned cost $80, balance assy cost $125 and final short block assy cost $100. If your wanting to move beyond ~60 horse, do it.
IMO, the guys who pull up to my car giving a wonder look and a subsequent thumbs up don't care about whether the motor is balanced and trust me no level of balance will enable you to catch up with Mustang. I'm investing in the suspension right now because I really want to enjoy driving the car. So if balancing doesn't make sense, invest in something else that keeps our odd ball cars on the road.
